Energy savings using LiquidFoil Radiant Attic Barrier is a proven low cost quick recovery of investment energy saving solution that leads to long-term results and year after year energy savings. Which means keeping more of your money in your pocket.
Henry LiquidFoil™ Attic Barrier is a radiant heat control coating that keeps heat out of your home during the summer and in during the winter. Radiant Barriers work by reflecting heat. Radiant Barriers KEEP the heat out. This is significantly different than insulation that SLOWS down the TRANSFER of heat. By keeping over 80% of radiant heat from entering or escaping a building, LiquidFoil Radiant Attic Barrier cuts energy consumption and costs significantly. (Click here for the fast facts sheet.)
How We Got Into LiquidFoil
Max, the founder of Practical Improvements, was looking for a way to install a radiant barrier in his 1969 2,600 square foot ranch. After researching the all the radiant barriers available, he was convinced that LiquidFoil was clearly the best option. The Orlando market was still stuck in the 1990's technology of using "staple up" foil. With our relationships with Henry in the roofing industry, Max was able to obtain LiquidFoil and install it into his house. The change was immediate. His attic temperatures fell instantly. While the summer of 2011 has set record heat levels, Max's attic temperature has never been above 123 degrees. That is a drastic reduction from the high before Liquid Foil of 157 degrees. His electric bills fell. His rooms are noticeably more balanced in temperature. The air coming out of his AC ducts is 5 to 7 degrees cooler. The Practical Improvements team was mobilized and the rest is history. Practical Improvements now dominates the radiant barrier market in Orlando.
Why You Should Install LiquidFoil in Your Home
LiquidFoil radiant attic barrier makes "cents" if you you have AC ducts in your attic. The beauty of LiquidFoil is the simplicity of application which means it is extremely cost effective. Research from independent resources like Florida Solar Institute, Oakridge Observatory, North Carolina's Appalachian College indicates that Florida home owners will quickly see the recovery of their investment dollars for LiquidFoil in annual cooling cost reduction. Once you have recovered your investment, then every month is simply money in your pocket. The quicker you install LiquidFoil, the quicker you will start saving money. If you figure out the annual % return on the purchase and installation of LiquidFoil, it truly is a great financial investment.
Radiant Barrier or Insulation
Research indicates the ultimate solution is BOTH. The first step is Radiant Barrier to keep the heat out of your attic. This step will lower the temperatures in your attic. Air-conditioning ducts do not have a lot of insulation. Most ducts are R-4 to R-6. Consequently, the heat from the high attic temperatures quickly transfers into the AC ductwork. The North Carolina Appalachian College test houses achieved a 57% reduction in cool air temperatures flowing from the AC ducts. This means the AC unit did not have to run as long to cool the house. LiquidFoil will keep the heat out of your attic. A comprehensive ORNL1 study confirms that homes with attic air ducts and R-19 insulation in the attic floor will benefit from even greater energy savings with LiquidFoil radiant attic barrier than they would from upgrading the insulation to code levels.
Insulation on top of the ceilings will slow down the movement of heat between the conditioned space inside your home and the unconditioned space in your attic. Florida Solar Institute research indicates a one-two punch of radiant barriers coupled with R-30 insulation is the cost effective solution that will achieve the same energy cost savings as other approaches which can often run in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Radiant Barrier or Spray Foam Insulation
Our experience is that in retrofitting a home, radiant barrier is the way to go. Why? First reason is cost. To achieve the same energy savings as radiant barrier, spray in foam would cost tremendously more money. For cost alone, LiquidFoil makes sense!
The second reason is indoor air quality. In order to protect air quality, homes must have a fresh air exchange, humidity control, and control of radon gases which are naturally emitted from the soil. When building a new home, it is simple (but costly) to include ERV units in the AC system, humidity control AC units, and extra radon gas barrier protection. When an existing home is retrofitted to a closed envelope with spray foam, it is critical to include retrofitting the air exchange system of the AC as well as the addition of humidity control and adding protection to keep radon gas out of the house. Without these very costly additions, air quality can suffer. Comparable energy savings can be achieved with a low cost LiquidFoil radiant attic barrier and R-30 insulation without creating air quality concerns.
Spray On or Staple Up Radiant Barrier
Spray on is the way to go. Here is why: Apples for Apples when new, staple up foil has a slightly better reflective rating. But...... this slight advantage is quickly transferred to LiquidFoil when dust starts to collect on the staple up foil. Moreover, LiquidFoil is able to reach further into the eves and into the "crooks and crannies" than staple up which means LiquidFoil provides a significantly larger percentage of radiant protection to the attic. LiquidFoil will not affect cell phone or TV signals like some of the staple up products. Oakridge observatory's testing indicates that Liquid Foil and staple up products are virtually equal in performance. Moreover, LiquidFoil will never fall down, LiquidFoil will not be shaken loose when re-roofing your home, LiquidFoil will not provide a place for spiders to next, LiquidFoil is not destroyed by rodents like squirrels, and LiquidFoil never collects dust. (click here for photos of what happens to staple up after a wind storm) At the end of the day, it is easy to see why LiquidFoil radiant attic barrier has completely displaced any staple on product. We see it just like the computer replacing the old manual typewriter. And...... LiquidFoil costs only a fraction of the price of staple up foil. Better protection, greater durability, less money -- LiquidFoil is the hands down winner.
